The Invitation by Oriah
I want to fix everything. It’s so hard to let things be, to believe it’s enough, just being there, just listening, just clucking along and shaking my head and willing my eyes to shoot out kindness like pastel laser beams. So many of my friends suffer, both in blogland and in the un-linkable flesh. I click PayPal links and summon impromptu therapists and weep over desperate emails and swallow my fear for the camera, for the cause, and it still feels like so little, seems so inadequate, so trite.
My friend Marc sent me this poem, and it resonated so deeply I’ve read it a hundred times over. Marc felt bad that he hadn’t heard of it before now but I hadn’t either, so if he and I are the last two on earth then I’m fine with the company — but just in case we’re not, I’m offering it to you today. For all of us who think we’re not doing enough, sit a moment with me here. “Sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.”
Maybe it’s enough after all.
***
The Invitation
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon…
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”
It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.

Jenny, Bloggess says:
I needed this today. This poem. These thoughts. I needed it after one of the biggest, most terrifying decisions I’ve ever had to make. This poem was a hug and a reminder that I’m doing the right thing.
Thank you.

I went back to school to become a social worker for this very reason..I feel bearing witness, and companioning people through hard times is a gift. Its grace. Both in the giving and the receiving.

Achingly beautiful! Singing to me today. “I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back..”
I am living in an area battling a flood that could overtake our town, but its the busloads of strangers, standing in the mud and water fighting along side of us that are bringing these words to life for me!!
Thank you for sharing!

That is a really beautiful poem. I have been working through the “disapointing another to be true to one’s self” portion lately. The poem in it’s entirety reminds me of the kind of friend I would like to be.

Nope. You weren’t the last two on earth. I’ve never seen it either. Well obviously I have now, but not before you posted it.
I don’t know about alone with myself, but I’m perfectly content alone with Tonka. Trouble is I know I’m probably going to outlive him and that… I don’t like to think about.

One more thing…wanted to share a quote that I have on my myspace page…
“I do not care what car you drive. Where you live. If you know someone who knows someone who knows someone. If your clothes are this year’s cutting edge. If your trust fund is unlimited. If you are A-list, B-list or never heard of you list. I only care about the words that flutter from your mind. They are the only thing you truly own. The only thing I will remember you by. I will not fall in love with your bones and skin. I will not fall in love with the places you have been. I will not fall in love with anything but the words that flutter from your extraordinary Mind……”

Those words basically encapsulate what I’m aiming for in life. Wow.

This poem is how I met my husband. I had been divorced and recently reentered the dating scene again. I was absolutely frustrated by the results of my initial online dating efforts that I almost canceled my subscription. But I thought, f*ck I’ll just post this poem and make it *clear* – without apologies – what kind of character I expect in a person. The moment I posted it, my man dropped me a note. he’d read it before and was impressed to see me use it as my profile. It started the dialogue and set the precedent.
We married three years later.

If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.”

Oh Mags, this is it. I wish there were more bloggers, writers, women like you. I see how you love. I see it. I wonder if you know how much you do with these posts, with these words.
I want to know these things about people too. I meet random people at parties and I give up small talk to dig deep into their bones. It makes me an odd party guest. But, I think people want to spill their stories. They want to be heard.
I love that you are that soft landing for so many of us.

I came across The Invitation several years ago. I remember being so touched by the words on the cover and then echoed between the covers through many stories of growth and discovery. I remember trying so hard to accept that invitation, but always being just a little too scared. I’ve kept that book with me all this time. I feel like it’s been my compass at times… balanced, in my life, by the Bible. Hard to explain. Or maybe I just did?
